AN AMERICAN IN CHAMPAGNE
AN AMERICAN IN CHAMPAGNE From my seat’s view as a competitor in the World Blind Tasting…
The USA Wine Tasting Team of 2024 was proudly represented by four accomplished women: Kristen Shubert, Lisa Redwine, Paige Bindel, and Katy Long. Together, they brought a diverse blend of professional experience, regional perspectives, and a shared passion for wine to the international stage. In October 2024, the team traveled to Bordeaux, France, to compete in the prestigious World Blind Tasting Championship, where they joined 40 teams from around the globe.
During the competition, teams were tasked with blind tasting and identifying 12 wines by country, region, vintage, and grape variety—all within a high-pressure, 10-minute window for each wine. The USA team held their own, placing in the middle of a fiercely talented field, and demonstrating poise, precision, and teamwork throughout.
Beyond the results, the experience was unforgettable: an opportunity to connect with fellow wine professionals, exchange global perspectives, and challenge themselves on the world stage. The team is incredibly proud of their performance and already looking ahead to the next season with renewed focus and drive. With strengthened camaraderie and lessons learned, the USA Wine Tasting Team is eager to raise the bar in 2025—representing the depth and diversity of American wine talent.
The World Blind Wine Tasting Competition is sponsored by the French wine magazine, La Revue du Vin de France! Thirty-five countries’ teams are invited to compete against each other for the title of:
World Blind Wine Tasting Champion! Twelve unmarked wines are served to each team, consisting of 5 professionals; the teams have ten minutes per wine to respond with their knowledge by naming the grape variety, the country of origin, the region of origin, the producer, and the vintage. All this in only ten minutes per wine. This truly requires a team to have deep knowledge of wine grape varieties, where they grow, terroir (weather conditions, topography, soil structures) viticulture, enology and intense concentration and sense memory which comes from the olfactory bulb.

The team consists of ladies who met as volunteer wine judges for a Wine Competition in 2021. As wine professionals, their paths regularly cross at wine-related events. The group is working to secure their 501 C-3 certification for donations that will assist in covering the travel costs, accommodations, entry fees, practice wines, and more. The international competition is on October fourteenth in Provence, France, where they will face up to thirty-six other countries for the best in the WORLD title and trophy. In 2021, they were the first all-female team to enter this competition! As their proctor, I know their dedication, experience and strategy will make them strong contenders!!
The USA Wine Tasting team is the first and only all-woman team and consists of professional women, from winemakers to Certified Sommeliers, to educators, award-winning journalists & spokespersons – each of these women are bringing their knowledge and passion to the table. Get to know them here.
